“It’s Halloween at the House Museum”
Vintage Halloween decorations are on display in the 1950s Park Forest House Museum,
located in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 227 Monee Road from September 21 through
November 6, 2024. The museum is open Wednesday and Saturday 1:00 to 3:30; or at
other times by appointment. Admission is adults $5; 12 and under are free.
Display items include Gurley Halloween candles, die-cut decorations, a boxed costume
with mask and a vintage Halloween bag. Park Forest 75 th Anniversary Exhibits are on
display through November, 2024.
The society is celebrating 26 years of the museum being open and 76 years since the first
residents moved to Park Forest. The 75th Anniversary marks 75 years since the village
incorporated.
St. Mary’s is among 19 churches being considered for closure by the Joliet Diocese, so
this year may be the last for the museum. “If people have been meaning to come, this is
the year to see it,” says director Jane Nicoll.
The museum always tells the story of how Park Forest was developed and describes life
in the village in its first 5 years, 1948-1953. Toys, dolls, books, clothing and household
furnishings all help portray life in the early 1950s to 1960s. Information is on the website
at http://www.parkforesthistory.org and with Jane Nicoll at 708-481-4252, or Mike Gans
at 708-305-3308.
